In 1980, James was chosen to lead the damage analysis team in the Uranium Antitrust Litigation (MDL 342), one of the most complex commercial antitrust cases of its time. The case resulted in a $250 million recovery from Gulf Oil for the agency.

Transition to Colorado and Law Firm Leadership

In 1985, James Bain of Colorado entered private practice in Colorado by joining a law firm renowned for its work in commercial litigation. Within a year, he became a partner, handling cases involving commercial and construction disputes with significant financial and legal implications.

Building Legacy Through Firm Leadership

In 1990, James joined another respected firm, where he continued his work in construction and commercial law. In 2004, he co-founded a new firm with two colleagues. The goal was to deliver high-quality legal services while maintaining accessibility and a client-centric focus.

In 2009, a fourth partner joined the team, and the firm’s name was updated. By this point, the firm had earned a strong reputation within Denver’s legal community. All four partners were selected for inclusion in Super Lawyers, a peer-reviewed honor. That same year, the firm was featured in Newsweek as part of its coverage of attorneys in the state of Colorado.

Influence Through Writing and Publication

James also contributed to the legal field through writing and editing. For more than two decades, he served as editor of the “Construction Forum” section in Colorado Lawyer, the official publication of the Colorado Bar Association.

In addition to his editorial work, he authored several articles on construction law. In 1986, he published Negligence: The Construction Claim Panacea? In 1987, he wrote two articles discussing the decline of caveat emptor in the state. In 1988, he examined the legal framework of public construction contracts and contributed an article to The Construction Lawyer, titled "Negligence Claims in Construction Litigation." In 1997, he published Landmark Changes in Colorado Construction Law, reviewing key shifts in legal precedent.

Service, Speaking, and Arbitration

James's contributions also extended to service and education within the legal profession. He served as Chairman of the Legal Advisory Committee for the Associated General Contractors of Colorado for five years. He was a member of the National Panel of Arbitrators for the American Arbitration Association, focusing on commercial and construction-related cases.

He regularly spoke at legal events, presenting seminars for the Colorado Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the Real Estate Section of the Colorado Bar. He also served as Seminar Chairman for the Institute for Advanced Legal Study, where he played a role in shaping educational programming for attorneys.

Recognition and Professional Standing

Throughout his career, he received multiple honors for his work. He earned the Civil Litigation Writing Award from the Colorado Bar Association in both 1986 and 1987. He was also listed in Outstanding Lawyers of America, a recognition limited to 100 attorneys per state.
